Materials:
  • Child's hand
  • Alginate
  • Warm water
  • Plaster or Hydrocal
  • Cutter
  • Paints
Step 1 Image Step 1:

Mix the desired amount of alginate & place it into a suitably sized container.

Step 2 Image Step 2:

Dip the child's hand into the mix and then bring it straight out again. Wipe off any air-bubbles with your fingers and re-dip the child's hand.

Step 3 Image Step 3:

Lightly hold the hand in place, ensure that the hand does not touch the sides of the container. Remove loose edges carefully.

Step 4 Image Step 4:

When the alginate is set (rubbery but firm) use mild pressure to remove the hand. Rinse the set alginate in luke warm water to clean out any oils and dirt.

Step 5 Image Step 5:

Mix the amount of plaster or Hydrocal. Ensure that the plaster is mixed as per the spec sheet.

Step 6 Image Step 6:

Pour a thin ribbon of the plaster into the alginate mould. You may need to rotate the mould before filling entirely. Depending on the pose.

Step 7 Image Step 7:

Once the mould is full of plaster tap or vibrate the container to help remove any air-bubbles.

Step 8 Image Step 8:

When the plaster is dry, carefully turn the container over and remove it from the alginate mould.

Step 9 Image Step 9:

Carefully start to cut away the alginate. This will take a lot of patience. Remember that the plaster may still be weak at this time. And here it is! A perfect replica to treasure forever.
