Terracotta Clays

Terracotta
Suitable for handbuilding or throwing.Excellent working characteristics, easy to dry and fire. Fires orange to brown depending on temperature. Soft orange at 1000oC darker red/ brown at 1100oC. Bisque Cone 06 (1000oC) Glaze Cone 06-01(1000-1150oC). Grog size -50. Contains fine sand for added workability and strength. Sand 50 mesh.

 

Terracotta½ Grog

A terracotta clay with the addition of fine 0.5 mm Grog (20%).
A very popular clay for school use. Can be used on the potters wheel and for handbuilding projects. Bisque 1000c).Glaze up to 1150oC. Grog size – 30 mesh (0.5 mm).

 

Terracotta + Grog
A terracotta clay with large addition of fine 0.5 mm Grog (35%). Suitable for large pots, sculptural pieces etc. Handbuilt or thrown. Bisque 1000o).Glaze up to 1150oC. Suitable for raku firing.
Grog size – 30 mesh (0.5 mm). (grog = calcined (fired) clay.)

Terracotta Tile Clay
A terracotta clay with the addition of coarser (1mm) grog. Suitable for large handbuilt and thrown pieces. Good tile clay. Fires a rich orange colour. Bisque 06(1000oC). Fire up to 1200oC. Grog size -16 (1 mm). Excellent clay for tiles.
