Knitalpaca alpaca yarns

By: Knitalpaca

Alpacas are very attractive animals, and many people keep them solely for their ‘cute factor’. But they were bred originally by the ancient South Americans for their fleece, a very soft, light and warm fibre which is ideal for luxury clothing and textiles.

In Australia, alpacas have another advantage: they are soft footed and therefore much lighter on the fragile landscape than other, hooved livestock. Building on these qualities, and the great variety of natural colours of alpaca, knitalpaca has created luxurious alpaca knitting yarns, rovings and designs to make the most of Australian alpaca.

Knitalpaca works with a specialist ‘boutique’ fibre mill which allows all processing to be done in Australia. Increasingly Australian natural fibres are being processed off shore. We are very pleased to be able to present an ‘all Australian’ product to Australian knitters and crafters.

Currently knitalpaca yarns come in a range of natural colours; we process fibre of the same colour together or blend to achieve a wider range of tones. This means that there may be some variation in colour from season to season, but we believe that having soft, naturally coloured yarns without any artificial dyes is worth this small inconvenience. We concentrate above all on softness and a sound ecological approach, so we began with natural colours, although we are currently considering dyeing options very carefully.
