Wedi Board

Feature Image
By: Smalti Australia

Wedi board is at last available in Australia! This is an extremely useful substrate for mosaicists. It is made up of a high density lightweight foam core sandwiched between fibreglass mesh, with a cement skim. It is extremely light, tough, and can be cut with a sharp knife into any shape. No power tools are needed. It will not warp and is waterproof and suitable for outdoor use if the exposed foam edges are protected, either by a frame or a coat of cement or cement-based adhesive. In the European building industry it is used as an underlay for tiling applications in wet areas such as bathrooms.

We have managed to source a limited supply within Australia. This will not be replaced, so when it has been sold, that's it - no more wedi board! It is uneconomic to import wedi, as the shipping costs are prohibitive.

We are currently supplying 1cm and 2cm thick wedi board in three sizes: 30 x 30 cms, 60 x 30 cms and 60 x 60 cms (actually the 30 cm is 29.8cm and the 60cm 59.6cms). Also available are the fixings for hanging the wedi, complete with instructions, which must be ordered separately, and according to thickness (which determines the length of the central bolt). Each set of fixings comprises two each of washers, bolts, nuts and D-rings with which to hang a single piece of wedi. So if you are going to cut up your wedi, don't forget to order more fixings! Note: the fixings must be attached to the board before affixing the mosaic.
