Artist's Profile

By: Eggshell Artistry By Beverley Currie

Originally from Numurkah a country town in Victoria, Beverley initially studied and practiced nursing before venturing into catering and hospitality in Sydney.

Whilst working at the University she took on extra studies in Commercial Cookery, Iridology, Nutrition and Massage. It was whilst attempting all this that she was attracted to a 'decorated egg' segment on television and was amazed at this concept and the beauty of the finished product. She decided to track down the artist and found Lola McNickle, from whom she took her first class in early1982. Thus began her "egging" life.

It was not too long before she started receiving invitations to attend 'Arts & Craft Shows' at local Colleges around Sydney, then extending into country New South Wales, Canberra, Victoria, Queensland and WA, including being asked by Lola, to travel with and help whilst she was teaching and showing her work.

In 1986, Lola recognised Beverley's real talent in this unique art form and asked her to start teaching in her own right initially with regular classes in Cronulla. She went on to travel widely teaching across the country, as well as establishing a series of 3-day seminars in Sydney. Beverley tackled the large Craft Shows in the Capital Cities, such as the 'Women's Weekly Craft Show, in Melbourne & Sydney, other large Shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra & Brisbane, and opened up the art of 'egging' in Australia.

Beverley purchased Lola's small supply business in late 1986 and established the first egg decoration 'Mail Order' supply business in Australia, 'Eggery Supplies', which grew rapidly. 'Eggshell Artistry' was also established which enabled her to sell her work on consignment whilst still teaching.

In 1994, after contracting breast cancer, Beverley sold her business interests and put her egging on hold to concentrate to her health.

Later, she established and ran a bed & breakfast business in 'Burraneer' for several years and was an inaugural member helping to establish the Bed & Breakfast Council of New South Wales before relocating to Queensland keeping occupied with several business interests.

After a 16-year break from egging, Beverley returned to her passion, creating numerous masterpieces, exhibiting and exploring new teaching opportunities. Her works are sold across Australia and are prized collectables. She attends many international Egg Shows and keeps in touch with fellow artists around the world.

Beverley has been a member of the International Egg Art Guild (IEAG) since March 1986.

The Guild (previously called the National Egg Art Guild) was first established to reflect the growing interest in egg decorating from countries outside the USA. As egg artistry grew from countries outside the USA, the IEAG was formed. With the majority being from Australia and the UK, Beverley was asked to become the inaugural representative of the IEAG for the Australian & New Zealand regions, and still holds this position today.

The IEAG also conducts a 'Masters Programme', which Beverley has passed, holding Certificates in four divisions, being 'Novice', Beaded & Jewelled, Decoupage, Diorama and Filigree.

The Guild now has members worldwide.
