If you've ever had to adjust a hemline, now there is an easy option.Local seamster Zac Kelly has been altering hemlines for years and he believes the main issue causing women to change the length of their trousers is to suit flat shoes or high heels.

With that problem in mind, Zac came up with a solution - a clever gadget that can be altered with each wear, depending on the length you want. The Z Multi Hem is a simple fastening system with a row of studs which clip on to several rows of fasteners. You just clip the studs into the level fastener which suits your heel height.

The Z Multi Hem is available in 17 colours and retails for $19.95. Z Multi Hem will be launched on 29 - 31 May at Brisbane Textile Art Festival. Though Zac's invention isn't the only way to cheat on hem repairs.

Sewco's Lesley McDonald recommends the hemming tape,'Hemming Web'. "You just put it on over the raw edge of the hem, then iron it on to stick down," said Lesley. While hemming tape is affordable, it only lasts around several washes.

Of course if you're a sewer, you don't have to cheat at all. These days, most basic machines will do a good job when it comes to a straight stitch hem.For a super fine finish on trousers and suit pants, Lesley recommends using a blind stitch which is almost invisible from the outside.

But if you're after the cheapest solution, hand stitching is the best option. Some tips for a professional finish include:

  • press the hem first to straighten it out
  • pin it in place so the hemline doesn't slip
  • always use a sharp needle to sew with
  • match your cotton with the fabric
  • take small stitches into the garment so you can't see the stitching from the front
