Frequently Asked Questions

By: Big Quince Print

Q: Can you print on polyester or only cotton?
A: We have dyes for both polyester and cotton, but there are some colour limitations with the technology we have available for polyester shirts. Check with us whether your design's going to work on Poly!

Q: Do you specialise in long or short print runs?
A: The size of the machine enables us to do HUGE print runs. One-offs or print runs of two or three are just as easy. If your club needs extra shirts, they can be printed on demand; there’s no need for you to buy excess stock or print more than you need.

Q: What's the difference between digital printing, transfers and screen printing?
A: We have two digital printers which print directly onto the garment with dyes. On white or light shirts, this dyes the fabric so you can't feel the image, but you get a high resolution, full colour image. On darker shirts, the printer lays down white ink as necessary then adds colour. The result is softer and lighter than a plastisol screen print, and often finer in resolution and detail. Transfers are heat pressed onto the garment. The press sets the glue, creating a strong bond which is more durable than most screen prints. We use transfers for some simple jobs to achieve clean colour and sharp edges. We cut the transfers to shape with a digital cutter, so there is no transfer where there's no colour. Screen printing involves pushing ink through a screen which has been made up with a stencil of your pattern. It is cost effective for long runs and for one or two coloured designs. We offer all these options, and will help you work out which is best for your design!

Q: T-shirt prices?
A: Check out our DIY quote page on our website!

Q: Will the image wash out?
A: Ink digitally applied to cotton and heat treated is absorbed by the fibres and set. Ink digitally applied to polyester fabrics actually bonds to the polymer during the heat pressing process, so will not wash out! Excess ink often comes out in the first wash, in a natural process which slightly fades the print, but long term durability is guaranteed. The transfers we use continue to amaze us with their reliability on our own garments. We will refund or replace any items which lose too much colour.

Q: How big an area can you print?
A: The print bed is 2.5m x 1.18m. There are ways of printing larger banners, beadspreads or blankets, but matching up may be difficult if the image is continuous. On T-shirts, our standard plattens are 40X50 cm. Talk to us about going larger.

Q: Do you have an outlet where I can browse or buy?
A: We have an online store, but no physical shop-front. However, we’re happy to be communicative by phone, email, and face-to-face in our big print shed!
